Understanding Professional Teeth Whitening Techniques
As we grow older, our teeth tend to turn yellow or brown. This is because everyday our teeth get stained from substances such as cigarette and coffee. Often times, when a person wants to achieve whiter teeth he or she seeks help from a dentist. Professional teeth whitening can be done in two ways: internal and external.
External techniques
This process involves applying the whitening gel on the outer areas of the teeth. This is great for external stains such as those caused by smoking. Unfortunately, this is not very helpful for stains which are found within the teeth such as those brought about by metal fillings. Results are quick- it takes just about an hour for it to be noticeable.
External techniques can be done in two ways: home
whitening and laser whitening. In the former, the dentist will create a
rubber mouth guard that fits your teeth. He will then provide you with a
professional teeth whitening gel and give you instructions on how to use it.
On the other hand, the laser whitening is done by having a dentist mold a
protective rubber material around the teeth and afterwards apply the
whitening gel. The teeth will then be exposed to laser light to increase
whitening effect. This process lasts for one to two hours.
Internal teeth whitening
This type of professional teeth whitening treatment is used to remove internal teeth discoloration brought about by traumatized or constricted blood vessels in the teeth. The process is done by putting the whitening gel or bleach inside the affected area for about seven days. This process is painless and safe as long as it is not applied to teeth that underwent root canal treatment or removal. After a week you will be required to see your dentist so that he or she can remove the filling and the gel. Usually the results are wonderful however, in some instances you may need backup whitening products to achieve the whiteness you desire.
